May 30, 2024 : Sutter Health, a prominent healthcare system in Northern California, has unveiled plans for a significant expansion project at its flagship medical center, Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. This initiative, valued at $100 million, underscores Sutter Health’s commitment to addressing the growing demand for healthcare services in the greater Sacramento region.
The expansion project centers on transforming previously unused space within the Anderson Lucchetti Women’s and Children’s Center. A total of 43,320 square feet on the fifth floor will be converted to create critical new inpatient care facilities. This includes constructing a 12-bed intensive care unit (ICU) designated for adult patients. Additionally, 30 medical-surgical rooms will be added, further enhancing Sutter Medical Center’s capacity to serve adult medical and surgical needs.
The project’s timeline anticipates construction commencing in April 2025. Upon completion, targeted for the end of 2026, the new facilities will become operational and ready to receive patients. Notably, the Anderson Lucchetti Women’s and Children’s Center already houses a 48-bed adult ICU on its fourth floor. This expansion project strategically complements the existing pediatric and maternity care services within the center, ensuring a comprehensive range of care for the Sacramento community.
“As demand for our services has risen, we determined that converting this existing space would be the most effective way to add essential adult inpatient beds,” explained Rachael McKinney, president of Sutter Health’s Greater Sacramento Market. This statement aligns with Sutter Health’s broader growth strategy across Northern California, which encompasses plans to establish 24 new care centers throughout its service area. These initiatives aim to make primary and specialty care more accessible to patients by strategically locating new facilities and reducing travel times.
The Sutter Medical Center expansion follows recent enhancements undertaken at other Sutter Health hospitals in the Sacramento region. Earlier this year, Sutter Roseville Medical Center embarked on a renovation project to add 24 medical-surgical patient rooms and a 12-bed adult ICU. Additionally, Sutter Davis Hospital completed an expansion project last year, incorporating five new general acute care beds alongside improvements to its emergency and maternity departments.
Sutter Health’s significant investment in its flagship medical center signifies the organization’s unwavering commitment to providing exceptional healthcare services to the Sacramento community. This expansion project is poised to increase Sutter Medical Center’s capacity to serve adult patients while solidifying its position as a leading provider of comprehensive medical care in the region.
