Over 100 Pounds of Fentanyl Seized from SF Open-Air Drug Markets in Past 4 Months

October  5, 2023 : Over 100 pounds of fentanyl have been seized from open-air drug markets in San Francisco in the past four months, according to the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD).

The SFPD’s Narcotics Division has been working to crack down on the sale of fentanyl, which is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Fentanyl has been linked to a sharp increase in overdose deaths in recent years, including in San Francisco.

In the first four months of 2023, the SFPD’s Narcotics Division seized over 100 pounds of fentanyl, which is more than the amount of fentanyl that was seized in all of 2022. The SFPD has also arrested over 100 people for fentanyl trafficking in the past four months.

The SFPD’s crackdown on fentanyl trafficking is part of a broader effort to address the city’s drug problem. In recent years, San Francisco has seen a rise in drug-related deaths, including overdose deaths from fentanyl.
The city has responded to the drug crisis by launching a number of initiatives, including expanding access to addiction treatment and creating a drug overdose prevention program. The city has also increased funding for law enforcement to crack down on drug trafficking.

The SFPD’s recent seizures of fentanyl are a positive sign that the city is progressing in its fight against the drug epidemic. However, more needs to be done to address the root causes of addiction and support people struggling with substance abuse.
