Lawrence County healthcare teams focus on local care

January 10, 2023 : Lawrence County is undergoing a huge change in its healthcare landscape with the discontinuation of Ascension St. Vincent’s Dunn Hospital. Three healthcare groups are operating to ensure continued access to quality healthcare for the residents.

IU Health and two recent Federally Qualified Health Center teams in Lawrence County, Indiana Health Centers (IHC), and Southern Indiana Community Health Care (CHC) stepped up after the Ascension information to focus on the future requirements of Bedford and the surrounding regions. The teams are happy to announce that improvement is being made and regard the community leaders who have committed to discussions concerning healthcare in this province.

“The ending of Dunn Hospital is going to be a big change in the healthcare sector for Lawrence County, and we are all operating together as quickly as possible to assure our community continues to have access to the care they require,” stated President Brian Shockey IU Health South Central Region.

IU Health Bedford Hospital President Larry Bailey said, “These groups have put in a lot of time and action over the 90 or so days since the Dunn Hospital information, and while the closure will change our local healthcare, I can state with confidence that we have a great support system to care for our residents, friends, family, and society.”

IU Health Bedford Hospital has witnessed an increase in patients in the emergency unit, lab, surgery, and walk-in as the community’s second hospital measured down to closing its doors. Their efforts to assist with this boost include the following:

  • Adding Sunday hours for its walk-in assistance from 1 – 7 pm.
  • Adding a health provider to the walk-in.
  • Boosting staffing for the emergency department.
