April 18, 2024 : A recent study published in JAMA Network Open has shed light on a potentially paradigm-shifting development in weight management. The research suggests that Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), a minimally invasive surgical procedure, may offer significant advantages over Ozempic, a popular weight-loss medication.
The study, conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, compared the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of ESG and Ozempic (semaglutide). Ozempic belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which have emerged as a promising non-surgical option for weight management.
The findings revealed that ESG led to greater weight loss compared to Ozempic. Patients who underwent ESG achieved a more substantial reduction in body mass index (BMI) over five years. This translates to potentially greater health benefits associated with weight loss, such as improved management of type 2 diabetes and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
Beyond its demonstrably superior weight-loss outcomes, ESG also emerged as the more cost-effective approach in the long term. The study’s projections suggest that the upfront cost of the ESG procedure is outweighed by the long-term savings associated with reduced healthcare needs compared to ongoing Ozempic use.
It is important to note that ESG is a surgical procedure that carries inherent risks associated with any surgery. However, these risks are generally considered minimal with ESG due to its minimally invasive nature. Conversely, Ozempic can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, although these typically subside over time.
The study’s findings can potentially influence treatment pathways for individuals struggling with weight management. While Ozempic remains a valuable option, ESG may be a more effective and cost-efficient solution for those seeking substantial and lasting weight loss, particularly considering the potential health benefits of a lower BMI.
However, the decision regarding the most suitable approach should be made individually, considering factors such as overall health status, weight loss goals, and risk tolerance for surgery. Consulting with a healthcare professional is crucial to determine each patient’s most appropriate weight management strategy.
